The scale of the universe

The universe, one scale at a time

Eighteen drawings, nested inside each other. The first is everything there is. The last is the smallest thing anyone can talk about.

How to read it. Every level stands on its own picture: the shape you went into stays behind its drawing, as the background. The dashed column holds notes on the level you are standing on, and so does the notes pane. The picture ringed in red pencil is the next level down, and carries its name: click it twice and you are one scale further in, with that picture now behind everything. This first page is the whole route on one line; the observable universe is where it starts.

The route. Observable universe · cosmic web · Laniakea · Local Group · Milky Way · solar neighbourhood · solar system · Earth · a city · a person · skin · a cell · DNA · a molecule · an atom · its nucleus · a proton · the bottom.

Colour marks the band you are in: violet and indigo for the cosmological scales, blue for the galactic, cyan and teal for the planetary, green for the human, amber for the biological, pink for the molecular, rose and magenta for the subatomic. Red is never a subject. Red only ever means go in here.

Each step down is between one and four powers of ten. From top to bottom is sixty one of them.
